LSPASTEL101: Pastel 101: Pans, Pencils, & Sticks

In this 4-hour, single session workshop we will explore the different types of soft pastels as well as various pastel supports and mixed media applications. We will delve into the diversity of pastels and the range of textures and effects that can be achieved with this versatile medium. We will also have a look at some grounds and mediums available that will make just about any surface accept pastel.

MATERIALS LIST

Lara will provide sample papers to do exercises on. If you already have pastel pencils, sticks or PanPastels please bring them.

*If you plan on taking the Get Real with Pastel workshop in February, you might want to select colors from the materials list for that workshop. Please see Lara’s website for that list.

PASTELS

I recommend getting a few colors* from

each of the following:

Pastel Pencils (3 - 5):

- Faber Castel Pitt Pastel pencils

- Stabilo Carb Othello Pastel Pencils

- Caran d’Ached Pastel Pencils &/or Sticks

Soft Pastels:

Any of the brands Central Art carries in open stock. 3 – 4 sticks.

PanPastels: (Optional)

I will bring a few PanPastels for you to try if you do not wish to purchase your own at this time.

1 pkg Derwent Rice Paper stumps

1 - 3 paper stumps

1 Kneaded Eraser

Drawing board or other hard surface such

as gatorboard.
