An Individualized Study Program for Artists
This class has been created to help artists improve their work no matter their skill level, medium, subject matter, or style of painting, from realistic to nonrepresentational approaches. Beginners may wish to set up a program that begins with all the fundamentals of drawing and painting as they discover what direction they want to take their art.
How it works
Each month, artists set their own artistic goals, allowing them to focus on specific elements in the drawing or painting process best suited for moving forward with the creation of their art. Each artist is then given weekly exercises, study materials and other tools to help them reach their goals. Some goals may be accomplished in one class, while other goals may take several weeks, or even months to accomplish. In any case, goals can be changed or updated as each artist progresses. Keeping artists focused on where they want to go with their art provides a sense of accomplishment and the confidence that comes with improvement.
Initiating discussion and feedback
At the end of each class, artists are encouraged to display their work for a gentle critique by myself and others. They are encouraged to talk about what they learned that day, what their challenges were, and what they would like to further improve on. Because everyone is at a different level in their learning, this is a great way to learn from each other. It also offers insight into how your visual message comes across to others.
Additional information
There will be much time needed to prepare individual exercises for each student, so goal setting should be presented to the instructor at least one week before the first week of classes. Artists are encouraged to work on the same painting until it is completed before starting a new one. This method allows artists to work through the entire art-making process, making adjustments and working through each challenge as it comes up.
