This focused two-day workshop offers a clear, structured introduction to portrait drawing and painting, designed to help artists build strong foundations and greater confidence in their process.

Over the course of two days, students will work step-by-step through the essential elements of portrait construction, including head proportion, value structure, composition, color fundamentals, and expressive paint application. Instruction emphasizes understanding why portraits work, not just how to copy a reference.

What the Workshop Covers

Day 1 — Proportion, Structure & Value
Students begin with adult head proportions and feature placement, learning how to handle basic angles and tilts. The focus then shifts to value mapping and tonal design—simplifying the portrait into clear light and shadow shapes that create structure, depth, and mood.

Day 2 — Tonal Block-Ins, Color & Finishing
Day two builds on the initial drawing with tonal block-ins, an introduction to practical color theory and limited palettes, and guidance on developing the portrait toward completion. Students learn how edges, transitions, and expressive mark-making bring life and personality to a portrait.

Who This Workshop Is For

  • Beginners who want a clear, approachable introduction to portrait drawing and painting

  • Intermediate artists looking to strengthen proportion, values, and overall structure

  • Painters who struggle with starting or finishing portraits

  • Artists working in all media

What Students Will Take Away

Participants will leave with a completed portrait, a stronger understanding of proportion and value, and a repeatable process they can apply to future portrait work in any medium.

MATERIALS

Regarding supplies, I prefer that artists contact me directly with questions as supply needs can vary depending on experience level, painting goals, and chosen medium. For the first session, students should plan to bring the following basic materials:

  • Pencils and erasers

  • Sketchbook

  • Tracing paper

  • Value finder

  • Black Sharpie marker

  • A final painting surface (9×12 or 11×14)

I maintain different supply recommendations for different mediums, particularly with respect to color choices, substrates, and paint brands, and I’m happy to provide those details once I know what each participant plans to work in.

I will be demonstrating in oil, however all mediums are welcome, including acrylic and other painting media.
