This ongoing monthly portrait class is designed for artists who want a clear, sequential approach to portrait drawing and painting, with extended working time and thoughtful instruction. Students may work from reference photos of people or pets, applying the same foundational principles to both.

Each month consists of a four-session series, allowing students to build skills progressively while also accommodating new participants. The class focuses on the core foundations of strong portraiture—structure, value, and color—while gradually guiding students toward expressive and personal interpretation. Emphasis is placed on how to see and make decisions, rather than copying features or rushing to finish.

What We’ll Cover

• Constructing the head as a three-dimensional form (human or animal)
• Organizing light and shadow for strong value structure
• Introducing color without losing form or clarity
• Integrating features naturally into the form
• Using edges, emphasis, and restraint to create expression
