Are you ready to move beyond simply copying the colors you see and begin painting with greater passion and intention? Do you want to create a palette that feels powerful, cohesive, and uniquely yours?

Join me for this workshop as we explore the colors that truly resonate with you and learn practical strategies for using color to communicate your vision with confidence. Pastel is the perfect medium for this journey—its rich range of color is already at your fingertips, inviting experimentation, intuition, and bold expression.

This workshop will focus on the landscape, but other subjects are welcome. *Suitable for students with some experience in pastels.

Day 1: 

- Introductions

- Overview of the concepts, and examples of paintings embodying them.

- Painting demo of quick color studies.

- Students do 5 quick color studies expressing 5 different moods.

- Lunch break

- Second demo demo of how to select colors working from a black & white landscape photo.

- Students work using one of their b&w photos: decide on a color palette, then paint in pastel.

Day 2:

- Third demo showing how to use a color photo and modify those colors in a pastel painting

- Students do their own work

- Lunch break

- Students develop one of their paintings, or start a new one.

- Display work and share with the group

MATERIALS

- Three reference photos of the landscape, each one in color and b&w (either printed out or on a device).

- Pastels – both hard and soft stick pastels, at least 60 colors. 

- Pastel paper – Canson Mi-Teintes in neutral colors, and/or sanded paper of your choice.

- Support – foam core or Gatorboard

- Masking or artist tape

- Drawing materials and small sketchbook
